GURU Tribute Mix

If you listen to hiphop– and I mean real hiphop– chances are you’ve heard by now that the late Keith Elam aka Guru of the legendary Gang Starr has passed away. It’s sad to see since Gang Starr was one of the first hiphop groups I started following and Guru was surely one of the best hiphop artists to come out of the Boston area. He’ll live on forever as a legend for all he’s done for hiphop. I decided to put together a little tribute mix as a homage to everything he’s done for the music. It’s only a rough draft for now and I haven’t put it up for download yet, but here it is on MixCloud for streaming. Enjoy.

Gifted Unlimited Rests Undisturbed
a 30 minute tribute to one of the greats

R.I.P. Guru (July 17, 1961 – April 19, 2010)

Pictures section now open

It’s pretty slim for now since I haven’t resized many of my pictures, but I’ll be taking care of that soon and there should be a good selection in the near future. For now, there’s a couple of pictures up. You can check them out by clicking the “Pictures, etc.” link in the right hand sidebar.

I’ve been playing out with these guys quite a bit lately. They’re gaining a good following in the Tahoe area with good reason. You can check them out @ myspace/hotbusiness or hotbusinessband.com. The tunes are mostly improvised with a mixture of funk, rock, prog and trance. I’ll probably open up with some funky hiphop (the classics of course) and with my outgoing song, Preston comes in on the drums, followed by Bryan on the bass and before you know it Hot Business is taking it away with a jam that builds off of whatever tune is fading out. They’ve also got Jason from Saturn Rising to join them again on guitar, and their show this past Saturday kicked ass. It’s great party music, so get your drinking shoes on and come out to Mo’s on Sunday 3/14 around 9pm.

‘Punching Babies’ — 25 mins of METAL

Metal is by far the most complicated genre for mixing, as a matter of fact it’s damn near impossible. It’s the one genre I turn to when I’m looking for a real challenge. With odd time signatures, coordinated breakdowns and blast beats (live drummers fluctuate the tiniest bit in tempo which can throw off a DJ’s mixing) it’s near impossible to find tracks that will blend together. So these tracks I used weren’t necessarily the ones I would liked to have (a song by Poison the Well but nothing by Meshuggah?!), but they were the ones in similar speeds or with elements that would work together.

TRACKLIST:

01. Decapitated – “Spheres of Madness”
02. All Shall Perish – “Awaken the Dreamers”
03. Slayer – “Angel of Death”
04. Slayer – “Raining Blood”
05. Killswitch Engage – “My Last Serenade”
06. Between the Buried and Me – “The Primer”
07. Slayer – “Criminally Insane”
08. Darkest Hour – “Deliver Us”
09. Between the Buried and Me – “Alaska”
10. Poison The Well – “Artists’ Rendering of Me”
11. Shai Hulud – “Linoleum (NOFX cover)”
